Gustav III:s samling med hans egna och andra berömda arkitekters ritningar, följde med Gustav IV Adolf i landsflykten 1809. Samlingen återköptes till Sverige 1925 av bröderna Helge och Axel Ax:son Johnson och ärvdes av Axels dotter Marie-Claire. Den finns idag förvarad på Engelsbergs bruk och ägs av Marie-Claire Cronstedts stiftelse.
Ritningarna är utförda av Sveriges ledande arkitekter under 1600- och 1700-talen över bland annat slott och trädgårdar vid Drottningholm, Ekolsund, Haga, Gripsholm, Karlberg, Ulriksdal, Svartsjö, Stockholm och Uppsala. Även Gustav III:s egna skisser är katalogiserade. Denna bok är även ett kompendium till Gustav III Sin egen arkitekt där ritningarna återges i 1:1-format över tre volymer.
