Den 1 augusti 1929 kom svenskbyborna till Sverige från en liten svensk by vid Dnjeprs strand i nuvarande Ukraina.
I "Banditer i byn" skildras livet i Gammalsvenskby under 1910- och 20-talet. Boken är skriven av Sigfrid Hoas, som växte upp i byn, och illustreras med ett sextiotal fotografier från Gammalsvenskby och den första tiden i Sverige.
