In the mid-1900s there was a marked shift of power between Church and State. Faith in the Church's edict not only faltered but disappeared in many places. It became even allowed to play football at the time for the Morning Service and High Mass. In Western society this coincided with a period of extreme sexual freedom, casual sex and one night stands were embraced. Posing in the nude became a profession. Today reactionary neo-moralists govern, having a tangible link to feminist movements. Churches are empty or have developed into experience centers, competing for audience with sport events and pop artists' glamorous appearances. But religion is constantly in the background, flaming up at crises, disasters and situations of distress, accentuated by the increased exposure of various ethnic groups to one another. Events related to fundamentalist interpretations are again filling the media.
