Description

At the turn of the last century, Selma Lagerlöf took a long trip to the Middle East together with Sophie Elkan. After this trip, Selma Lagerlöf wrote the partially documentary novel Jerusalem (1901-1902), a book that would become her major international breakthrough. During 2014-2018 author Ylva Gislén and artist Johan Widén traveled on the trail of both the novel and Lagerlöf’s and Elkan’s journeys: from depopulated rural areas along the Dal River valley to the hotly disputed geographic and political terrain in and around the contemporary city of Jerusalem. The multiple parallel series of lyrical writings and paintings in this book could be seen as an ongoing conversation on all the mythical, political and artistic issues provoked by the relationship between the novel’s past and our present reality. Essays by writer and cultural journalist Ingrid Elam and artist Sophie Tottie complement and introduce the work.
