I juni 1741 reser Carl Linnæus till Gotland på jakt efter nyttiga ting inom såväl mineralriket som växt- och djurvärlden. Tidigare samma sommar hade Linné utforskat Öland, och med samma nit tog han nu itu med den gotländska naturen. Flora och fauna får kärleksfulla och sakliga beskrivningar, och han fördjupar sig i de rika kulturhistoriska minnesmärkena. I den Gotländska resan kommer även Linnés starka människointresse till uttryck.
