Entgegen der musikwissenschaftlichen Forschungstradition, die das Phantastische, wo nicht tabuisierte, mindestens trivialisierte, gelangt Kämpf zu einem neuen Verständnis der musikalischen Romantik, wonach sie ihre Zugehörigkeit zur Moderne und ihre Wirkkraft für die Gegenwart nicht des Phantastischen wegen verliert, sondern erst gewinnt.
