In this text, Vernon Zunker integrates career counselling/development with mental health counselling. The book builds on the growing recognition that career counselling cannot be viewed in isolation of mental health issues; an individual needs to viewed as a whole person whose psyche and mental health are delicately intertwined. The first part of the book provides a solid foundation on career theory and development, and the second part deals with how mental health and career issues are intertwined and how a career counselor or mental health counselor can intervene.

The book is practical in nature, offering specific interventions to deal with counseling individuals with career and personal concerns. The idea that mental health and career counseling should be more closely tied together is gaining prominence. Historically career guidance and counseling has been taught separately focusing on career development theories and application. It is now becoming more obvious that career issues are closely tied to mental health and visa versa and thus the timing is right for this book's release.
